Emergency Services
A key initiative underway is the development of a
region-wide emergency radio broadcasting system. In April 2006, the Richmond
Regional Planning District Commission chairman appointed a committee to
investigate using WCVE-FM as a primary conduit to provide emergency information
to area residents—before,
during, and after disasters such as hurricanes or floods. While many of the
localities represented by the Commission are planning independent communications
systems to reach their citizens, there was consensus that WCVE-FM may play a
major role in getting needed information out in times of crisis. This project
facilitates the coordination of information broadcasted by localities during and
following an emergency through WCVE-FM.
Staff is also a member of several committees for the
purpose of sharing information and providing collaboration. Membership includes
the Metro-Richmond Hazardous Materials Work Group, Regional Environmental Crimes
Task Force, Intelligent Transportation Systems Committee, and Metropolitan
Medical Response System Steering Committee.
The primary focus of this program is to support
existing local initiatives and provide value-added services to regional
initiatives including:
Regional EMS Service Boundaries - Participate in roundtable discussion to
evaluate regional EMS service boundaries.
Center for Disease Control (CDC) Assistance - Work with the VAPDC GIS
committee to provide information requested by the CDC regarding locations of
various strategic facilities and structures.
Regional Emergency Response Planning TAC - Support regional coordination
efforts of the Regional Disaster Response Planning Technical Advisory
Committee.
Emergency Services Support – Provide support to regional initiatives
addressing emergency services.
