In May 2002, staff of the Richmond Regional PDC co-sponsored the Richmond Regional Bicycle and Pedestrian Symposium where Dan Burden, a visionary for walkable communities, showcased ways to plan and design people-friendly streets and neighborhoods to PDC and member jurisdiction staffs, elected officials, and interested citizens.

As part of the workshop, participants were encouraged to highlight corridors on maps displayed throughout the workshop area they felt should be studied for future use as a bicycle or pedestrian route.

Later, groups were taken outside to perform walkability audits—evaluations of walking/ bicycling conditions in the area.

The afternoon session was filled with issues such as ADA accessibility. Discussions touched on the need to be aware of sidewalk grading and the importance of building ramps on all sidewalks. Many times, one will see a ramp on one side of the street, only to find the other side is not equipped for wheelchair access.
