Regional Travel Demand Model

The RRPDC, as staff for the MPO, is responsible for conducting travel demand modeling to meet federal MPO planning requirements, including the regional travel demand model portion of the air quality conformity analysis, and development of model highway and transit networks for the analysis of LRTP alternatives and air quality conformity analysis. In addition, the RRPDC is responsible for model applications that may be used for scenarios analysis, corridor studies, and other MPO plans and studies that involve model applications.

The Regional Travel Demand Model has the following features:

  • New/expanded GIS based transportation networks

  • Time of day modeling

  • Congestion feedback

  • Transit model

  • New toll modeling procedures

  • Enhanced truck modeling procedures

  • Full use of “Cube Voyager” scripts

Other enhancements to the model include auto ownership rates by TAZ, and data from the 2008 and 2009 National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) and the 2009 NHTS supplemental large universities survey. The supplemental survey includes Virginia Commonwealth University.

The new Richmond/Tri-Cities RTDM will support VDOT and MPO planning needs as follows:

  • Air quality conformity analysis

  • Comprehensive HOV and toll enhancement

  • Mode choice and transit inputs

  • Congestion assessment

  • Subarea analysis

  • Truck movements
