Details:

The Bio-retention basins and grassed swale were installed during construction of the Charles City County Courthouse in 2005.  Approximately half of the entire site drains into these BMP/LID features.  Costs for the construction of the basins and swale have not been calculated separately since they were included in the original design and installed at the time of construction.  The two bio-retention basins are connected to one another by PVC piping in order to promote more even drainage.  In the swale, several wooden cross-ties help prevent erosion and encourage infiltration by slowing water flow.  At the base of the swale, water drains through a level spreader.

The courthouse and parking were constructed in a farm field.  During heavy rain events, ponding is not a problem and the bio-retention basins quickly infiltrate the stormwater that flows into them.  One notable site feature is the absence of curbs at the edge of the pavement along the basins and swale.  This allows for more even drainage of water into these features.

Grassed swale – note the absence of curbs, allowing for best flow of water off the parking lot and building area.
