Our Mission Statement:

"To strengthen the quality of life throughout the Richmond region by serving as a regional forum of member local governments to address issues of regional significance, providing technical assistance to localities, and promoting and enhancing the collective consensus on the economic, transportation, social, environmental, and demographic interests of the region.”

The Richmond Regional Planning District Commission is a regional planning agency with major emphasis in the areas of transportation, local technical assistance and information services including demographic, economic and geographic information systems.

The Commission, which was formed by local governments August 14, 1969 under the authority of the Virginia Area Development Actrevised and retitled the Regional Cooperation Act in 1995is comprised of elected officials and citizens who address mutual problems and work out solutions for the local governments which benefit from intergovernmental cooperation.

The Richmond Regional PDC's major objectives are to:

  • Identify issues and opportunities of an interjurisdictional nature

  • Establish plans and policies for addressing those regional issues

  • Identify ways and means for state and local governments and the private sector to implement programs

  • Help promote cooperation among state and local governments issue resolution

  • Provide technical assistance and information services to its member jurisdictions

The counties within the Richmond region rely on the Richmond Regional Planning District Commission to coordinate and facilitate regional cooperation, solving mutual problems which cross boundary lines. As the state forges ahead, it is becoming increasingly apparent that once individual, local issues addressed at that local level have developed into greater regional concerns, requiring regional discussions and policies. It is this direction that the Richmond Regional PDC strives to provide to our localities and as a result, to the state of Virginia itself.
